Established by escaped enslaved Africans in the 17th century, it holds the distinction of being the first free African town in the Americas. This village has preserved its rich cultural heritage, including its unique language, Palenquero, and traditions that reflect a blend of African roots and Colombian influences.

Despite its historical significance, Palenque faces pressing challenges. Many children lack access to quality education, limiting their opportunities for a brighter future. The elderly population often struggles to obtain essential medical care, exacerbating their vulnerabilities. The community’s isolation and limited economic resources contribute to inadequate infrastructure, affecting access to clean water, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.

The Peter Uba Foundation is deeply committed to addressing these issues.
