BATEY COMMUNITY PROJECT

Haitian workers, fleeing destitution, harvest 6,000 pounds of sugarcane a day for poverty wages in the Dominican Republic.

Batey Life & Environment

  • The Bateyes are communities and villages built around sugarcane mills where poverty is unrelenting, and the quality of life is almost nonexistent.
  • It is estimated that about 200,000 people live in 425 Bateyes throughout the Dominican Republic.

The Peter Uba Foundation
Widows Outreach Program

This Program provides support for widows by giving them a
monthly stipend, providing training, and helping them start
small businesses with the help of microloans to get them off the
ground.
They have created a support network as they each build
sustainable sources of income.
